“Futura” by Paul Renner

The Futura typeface was designed by graphic designer Paul Renner as part of the "New Frankfurt" mega construction project. Since its publication in Frankfurt am Main in 1927, it quickly became an international bestseller and made its way from the major cities to the moon. In 1969, the crew of Apollo 11 left behind a silver plaque during the historic moon landing. Set in the Futura font, the plaque reads:

"Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon. July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind"

Paul Renner was born on August 9, 1878 in Wernigerode. After studying architecture and painting in Berlin, Munich and Karlsruhe, he initially worked as a painter in Munich. He was also a graphic artist, type designer, author and teacher. Paul Renner died in Hödingen on April 25, 1956.
